YOUTHWORK - Child & Family Services. A unique program designed to develop young people and their communities by completing critical projects for nonprofits and government agencies in northern and central Michigan, such as planting trees, building boardwalks, or removing invasive species, to wildlife conservation, preserving historic buildings, trail development, and more. Youth receive hands-on experience and tackle local and global challenges while they earn a living stipend, scholarships, and 21st century job skills. We all benefit from YouthWork AmeriCorps!

Apprenticeships come in various forms, but usually involve on the job training as well as some classroom training. Apprenticeships look very different depending on the profession. A few professions you can enter via an apprenticeship are: ELECTRITION, PLUMBER, JEWELRY MAKER, WINEMAKER, BEEKEEPER, CARPENTER and PIPE FITTER.

Training Programs for Individuals Who Are Blind or Low-Vision - The Bureau of Services for Blind Persons Training Center (BSBPTC) is a comprehensive rehabilitative center, specializing in assisting youth and adults who are blind and low vision. Training Center staff work to provide customized training and employment services to help participants address challenges that may pose barriers to achieving their goals.   The BSBPTC is open year round and has accommodations for up to twenty-nine students in twenty-seven private rooms and two training apartments. Accessible rooms are available for those with special needs. Learn more on the BSBP Training Center website

In order to look up specific training/certification/schooling options, search the local trades union for the trade you are considering and see what programs/apprenticeships are available. This is usually pretty visible on their website but if not there are numbers for you to call. CAREER TRAINING PROGRAMS - Here is the list of Career Training Programs which qualify to receive scholarship funds under the Michigan Achievement Skills Scholarship. Applicants for the Michigan Achievement Skills Scholarship must research this list and choose a Career Training program prior to completing the Michigan Achievement Skills Scholarship application as selecting a Career Training provider is a required step in the application process. The Michigan Achievement Skills Scholarship Application can be found in the MiSSG Student Portal.

The MCTI provides individualized career development, education, training, and support services for individuals with disabilities preparing for and engaging in competitive integrated employment. The Michigan Career & Technical Institute (MCTI) is a post-secondary vocational and technical training center for adults with disabilities in Michigan. It is the 2nd largest rehabilitation training center in the country.

WOLVERINE POWER COOPERATIVE - Apprenticeship Program

The Joint Michigan Apprentice Program (JMAP), a U.S. Department of Labor-certified program, is sponsored by Wolverine Power Cooperative and IBEW Local 876. Housed at the Wolverine Training Center in Lake City, Michigan, the program is committed to producing safe, high-quality journeymen through exceptional, state-of-the-art apprenticeship training. The Joint Michigan Apprentice Program features segmented training labs and field instructions performed at a single location in northern Lower Michigan.

For classroom, lab and field training, Wolverine Power Cooperative partners with Northwest Lineman College (NLC), an industry-leading educational institution that provides pre-apprentice, apprentice and journey-level training for hundreds of companies throughout the United States and internationally. Graduates of NLC are highly regarded in the power delivery industry.

MRCC represents 14,000 carpenters and millwrights across the state of Michigan. Member carpenters help build diverse projects, large and small, residential and commercial. IBEW Local 498 represents the very best electricians in the state of Michigan. We are part of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers which has over 725,000 members throughout North America.

IBEW members receive the most extensive on the job training and classroom time to ensure that projects are done right the first time. IBEW Local 498 members install, maintain, and trouble-shoot the very critical electrical and data systems in the commercial, public, industrial, and residential markets throughout Northern Michigan.

UA Local 85

Apprenticeship Training

Charted on May 1, 1892, Local Union 85 has taken great pride in their members and craftsmanship for the past 127 years. It is with great honor and dignity that they claim the title of the United Associations Oldest chartered Michigan Local.

This Local was built with dedication and hard work. Many of its members come from multiple generations involved with the U. A. but it is open to all first generation Pluming, Steamfitting or HVACR Service Technicians professions.

The U.A. Local 85 is known for its training and apprenticeship.

BAKER

One last specific and fairly local program to mention that is a great opportunity is the MAT SQUARED PROGRAM. This is a technician training program in MECHATRONICS (technology combining electronics and mechanical engineering) and it's FULLY PAID FOR. It's available at multiple locations, Baker campus in Cadillac being one of them. It runs similar to Kettering University, where you swap between time in the classroom and time working with a company. You get paid while working, and receive a living stipend while in the school portion, even your book costs are covered. The following website can tell you more on this program.
